Gyan Chandra Acharya


His Excellency Mr. Gyan Chandra Acharya assumed his responsibilities as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Nepal to the United Kingdom on 23 February 2022 and presented his credentials to Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II on 31 March 2022. Before taking over as the Ambassador of Nepal to the UK, he served as the Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister of Nepal from August 2017 to February 2018.

He was the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS from September 2012 to March 2017.  Before that, he served as the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations, New York from November 2009 to September 2012 and Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations and World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva from 2003 to 2007. He was the Foreign Secretary of Nepal from February 2007 to November 2009. He worked in different capacities in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the diplomatic missions abroad during his long career in the foreign service of Nepal. He joined the Foreign Service of Nepal in March 1983.

He led and participated in many bilateral, regional, and international meetings. He was also involved with a number of national and regional institutions related to foreign policy, regional and global issues, sustainable development, environment and climate change and vulnerable countries.

He has completed Master’s degree in economics, received diplomatic trainings and attended various leadership programs.

H.E. Mr. Acharya was born in 1960. He is married to Mrs. Sunita Acharya, and they have a son and a daughter.
